Volleyball Wins Tournament, Miraldi Named MVP

Stockton, Calif.-For the first time since the 2007 season, the Spartan volleyball team won a tournament, this time the Hilton Stockton Invitational.  San Jose State defeated UC Riverside, 21-25, 25-22, 25-16, 25-14 to win the tournament Saturday evening. Earlier in the day, the Spartans fell to Loyola Marymount, 25-23, 22-25, 21-25, 15-25.

San Jose State last won a tournament during the 2007 season when the team went 2-1 at the ASU/Bancorp South Classic and the UVU/La Quinta Inn & Suites Invitational.

With the tournament victory, senior Kylie Miraldi was named the Most Valuable Player while Caitlin Andrade received all-tournament honors for their play over the weekend. 

In the win against UC Riverside, Miraldi tied the San Jose State single-match record for block assists and blocks in a match with 14.  She tied the block assist record held by teammate Brianna Amian and Liz Hudson, and the block record held by Amian, Hudson and Mandy McMahon.  For the weekend, she averaged 1.60 blocks per set.  In the match, she also hit .688 with 11 kills on 16 attempts and no hitting errors for her first double-double of the season.

Andrade recorded three double-doubles on the weekend.  On Saturday, she had 31 assists and 13 digs against Loyola Marymount and 33 assists, 14 digs and five block assists.  Andrade averaged 9.47 assists, 3.73 digs and 0.60 blocks for the weekend.  She ends the weekend in eighth place among San Jose State career assists leaders with 2,210 and needs 120 to move into seventh.

In winning the tournament, the Spartans defeated UC Riverside in the team's second match of the day.  Miraldi led the team with her 11 kills, and Savanah Leaf and Katie Turner each recorded 15 digs.  Krista Miller had nine kills and 10 digs.

In the first match of the day, San Jose State fell to Loyola Marymount in four sets.  Taylor Japhet led the Spartans with 15 kills and hit .325.  Turner led the team with 16 digs.

San Jose State now begins Western Athletic Conference play next week with two road matches.  The team plays at Utah State on Thursday at 7 p.m. MDT, and at Idaho on Saturday at 7 p.m. PDT.
