Berkeley, Calif.-Taylor Japhet and Courtney Zellmer each had nine kills for the Spartan volleyball team, but San Jose State fell at #13 California, 25-13, 22-25, 25-15, 25-14, Saturday night at the Molten/Hilton Garden Inn Classic.
Japhet recorded her kills on 34 attempts, while Zellmer had 19 swings in the match. Zellmer added seven digs, two blocks (one solo, one assist), one ace and one assist.
Others contributing included Kylie Mirald and Alex Akana with five kills each. Miraldi added two block assists, while Akana had a solo block and a block assist. Kristal Tsukano had four kills, a team-best 10 digs and a block assist. Caitlin Andrade recorded 21 assists, nine digs, two kills and a solo block. Thao Pham had five digs and an ace in four sets played.
The Spartans took the second set from the Golden Bears, 25-22. In the set, there were 13 tie scores and three lead changes. The Spartans were down 16-13, but fought back to tie the set at 16-16 on a Zellmer kill. The team then took an 18-16 lead on a Pham service ace. The Spartans won the set on blocks my Miraldi and Katie Turner.
San Jose State next plays at the USD Invitational next Friday and Saturday, September 18 and 19. The team faces UC Irvine Friday night at 7 p.m., and San Diego Saturday at 1 p.m.
