Volleyball Headed To Texas To Open WAC Season

SPARTANS OPEN WAC PLAY ON THE ROAD:  After playing in three tournaments to open the 2012 season, the San Jose State volleyball team opens the 2012 Western Athletic Conference schedule with two road games.  The Spartans play at Texas State Thursday and at UTSA on Saturday.

ABOUT TEXAS STATE:  The Bobcats enter Thursday night’s match with a 5-6 overall record after going 1-2 last weekend at the SMU Invitational. The team defeated Houston, 3-0, but fell to Auburn and Wichita State, 0-3.  Head coach Karen Chisum is in her 33rd season as head coach at Texas State.  Sophomore Alexandra Simms is fifth in the WAC in kills with 115, 3.19 per set, while Molly Ahrens has a team-leading 35 blocks, 0.97 ps.   This is the first meeting between the schools.
ABOUT UTSA:  The Roadrunners are currently 6-3 on the season after falling to Houston Baptist, 3-0, Monday night.  The team hosts Utah State Thursday in their WAC opener before the Spartans visit on Saturday.  Head coach Laura Groff is in her 11th season at the helm of the program.  Junior outside hitter McKenzie Adams is the reigning WAC Player of the Week after averaging 4.25 kills per set last week.  She leads the team with 126 kills, 3.60 ps, and is second in digs with 128, 3.66 ps. San Jose State has a 2-0 advantage in the all-time series after winning 3-0 at the 1998 Danka Invitational in Nevada, and 3-1 at the 2006 New Hampshire Tournament.
SAN JOSE STATE HEAD COACH:  Oscar Crespo is in his sixth season as head coach at his alma mater.  A 1990 graduate, Crespo was named head coach in March of 2007 as the program’s sixth head coach.  He has a 52-104 coaching record in four seasons.
LAST WEEKEND RECAP:  The Spartans finished 1-2 at the Boise State Invitational.  San Jose State needed five sets to defeat Southern Utah, 25-13, 22-25, 20-25, 25-20, 15-11.  A quintet of hitter had 10 or more kills, led by Samantha O’Connell with a career-best 16.  Michaela Leonard had her third double-double in as many matches with 46 assists and 11 digs.   Kiely Pieper led the team with a career-high 23 digs. San Jose State lost the first two matches of the tournament to UC Irvine (16-25, 22-25, 25-23, 25-27) and host Boise State (25-23, 19-25, 19-25, 26-24, 14-16).
WAC OPENERS:  For the first second consecutive season, the team will start WAC play on the road.  Since joining the conference, San Jose State is 5-11 in WAC openers and last won a WAC opener in 2005 with a 3-2 home win over Idaho.
ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAMS:  Three Spartans were named to all-tournament teams this season.  Hanah Blume was named to the UB Invitational and Lonestar Showdown teams, while Mary Alice O’Reilly received honors at the Lonestar Showdown and the Boise State Invitational.  Michaela Leonard picked up her first all-tournament team recognition at the Boise State Invitational.
BEST BLOCKING NIGHT SINCE 2007:  The Spartans recorded 17 blocks in the first match of the season for the best blocking night in five years.  The team had 1 solo block and 32 block assists against Oral Roberts, the most since 2007 when the Spartans had 19.5 blocks against San Francisco.  Last season, the Spartans had 16 blocks in a win over UC Riverside.
DOUBLE-DOUBLES:  Four Spartans have recorded 14 double-doubles this season, led by Hanah Blume with six.  Setter Michaela Leonard recorded double-doubles in five matches including all three at the Boise State Invitational.  Samantha O’Connell recorded her first this season against Canisius, while Krista Miller had double-doubles against Texas-Pan American and Southern Utah.
NEW SETTER:  Freshman Michaela Leonard stepped into the setting role for the Spartans this season.  She is averaging 11.00 assists per set which leads the WAC.  Leonard recorded a season-best 49 in a win over Buffalo.  She also recorded her first collegiate double-double with 47 assists and 12 digs against Canisius.  Leonard had four block assists versus Oral Roberts.
O’REILLY MAKING IMPACT:  After spending most of her freshman season as a key reserve for the Spartans, Mary Alice O’Reilly is making her mark on the team in her sophomore year.  She leads the team with 100 kills, 2.86 ps, and blocks with 37, 1.06 ps.  O’Reilly started the year with nine blocks against Oral Roberts and has been named to two all-tournament teams.  
BLUME DIGGIN’ THE BALL:  Outside hitter Hanah Blume leads the team and the WAC in digs with 153, 4.37 ps.  She has collected 10 or more digs in every match this season and had a career-best 25 at Boise State.  Blume has also recorded six double-doubles on the season because of her digging prowess.
2012 WAC TOURNAMENT:  The 2012 WAC Volleyball Tournament will be held Nov. 19-21 at the Convocation Center on the UTSA Campus.  The top-eight seeds advance to the three-day tournament.

UP NEXT:  The Spartans open the home portion of the schedule with three matches.  The team hosts Idaho on Thursday, Sept. 20, Seattle on Saturday, Sept. 22, and Pacific on Tuesday, Sept. 25.  All three matches begin at 7 p.m., inside Spartan Gym, located on the corner of Fourth and San Carlos Streets.
