San Jose-The San Jose State volleyball team defended its homecourt on Saturday with two wins at the SJSU Tournament in Spartan Gym. The Spartans won a hard-fought five-set match over Seattle, 25-14, 21-25, 25-18, 21-25, 15-13 in the morning, followed by a three-set win over Cal State Bakersfield, 25-15, 25-16, 25-18 to end the tournament.
Against Seattle, the Spartans served a season-best 13 aces including a career high five from Alex Akana and three from Caitlin Andrade. Hanah Blume added two aces with three others contributing an ace.
Akana led the team in hitting with 14 kills and hit .423 with only three errors on 26 attempts. Brianna Amian added 10 kills, while Taylor Japhet added nine. Blume recorded seven kills and 14 digs, while Krista Miller had eight kills and four blocks.
Sarah Griest led the team with a season high six blocks and added five kills. Andrade added three blocks including a solo and recorded her second double-double of the year with 47 assists and 17 digs. Katie Turner added 13 digs and five assists, while Courtney Zellmer added 13 digs.
In the nightcap, San Jose State hit a season-best .415 in the win over the Roadrunners. Blume led the team with 12 kills, while Griest and Akana each had eight kills. Akana hit .500 for the match, while Miller hit .625 with five kills on eight attempts and no errors.
Andrade had 39 assists, while Turner contributed 11 digs. Griest again led the team with three blocks.
"I am very happy with our three wins this weekend," said Spartan head coach Oscar Crespo. "I think this is a positive step for our team and give us confidence for the rest of the year. Now, we know that we have not only the physical ability but the emotional ability as well to win matches. We showed the ability to win with production from everyone offensively and defensively on the court."
The Spartans finished as the only undefeated team at the SJSU Tournament and placed three players on the all-tournament team - Akana, Andrade and Blume. A complete list can be found at the end of this story.
San Jose State travels to the UNLV Classic next weekend for three matches. The team plays Xavier on Friday and UNLV and Cal State Northridge on Saturday.
