Volleyball Uses Set Four Comeback To Defeat UC Irvine

Los AngelesTrailing 17-8 in set four, the San Jose State volleyball team used a 17-6 run to defeat UC Irvine, 23-25, 25-17, 25-18, 25-23, Friday afternoon at the Four Points Sheraton LAX/LMU Volleyball Classic in Los Angeles.

After giving up three consecutive points to the Anteaters, San Jose State head coach Oscar Crespo took a timeout at 17-8 in set four to challenge his team. From that point on in the set, the Spartans got three kills each from Kelly Crow and Brianna Amian and a kill from Nia Freeman to make the 17-6 run. The Spartans tied the match at 21-21on a Crow kill, took the lead for good on an Emily Burke kill at 23-22 and won the set and match on a UC Irvine service error.

“This was a good win for us,” said Crespo. “We started poorly in set four. After I took the timeout, Kelly and Niki (Clement) played solidly, and our entire team started playing better offensively. We were able to come back from nine points down, and that is a huge positive for us.”

Crow led the Spartans with 15 kills and hit .342 for the match with 38 attempts and only two errors. She added five digs, two blocks, two assists and a service ace. Amian added nine kills while hitting .304 and added three blocks. Freeman had seven kills and a team-best four blocks. Clement had six kills and a team-best 14 digs, while Colleen Burke added six kills, three digs, two aces and a block.

Emily Burke had 36 assists, six kills on nine attempts and no errors, and four digs. Kristal Tsukano added nine digs and three assists. Courtney Zellmer came off the bench for five digs, one assist and one service ace. Kylie Miraldi had one block and one assist, while Brittany Collet added an assist.

San Jose State is now 3-5 on the season and continues play at the tournament on Saturday. The Spartans face host Loyola Marymount at 12:00 p.m., and Pittsburgh at 5:00 p.m.
