Volleyball Victorious Over Portland State

San Jose-Down 14-8 in the final set, San Jose State scored the final eight points of the match to defeat Portland State 25-19, 15-25, 25-21, 16-25, 16-14 Friday night in the SJSU Tournament in Spartan Gym.

Down 14-8, Asia Casino served the final eight points of the match.  Alex Akana had three kills, while Hanah Blume scored two points of the final eight.  Casino added a service ace during the run. 

Blume led the Spartans with a season-high 20 kills and had her second double-double of the year with 19 digs in addition to hitting .375 in the match.  Akana added 12 kills and two blocks and hit .320 for the match.

"We found our rhythm tonight," said Blume.  "I don't think we will be up and down anymore.  We just looked at each other (in the fifth set) and knew we could do it and had confidence in each other."

San Jose State came out strong in the first set, winning 25-19.  Ironically, Casino closed out the first set serving the final four points including a service ace to end the set.

Portland State hit .452 to win the second set 25-15, while San Jose State won set three 25-21.  The Vikings won the fourth set 25-16 to send the match to the fifth set where the Spartans came back to win.

"This is a good win for us tonight and showed we can fight and come together as team to win," said Spartan head coach Oscar Crespo.  "I think we ball-handled well tonight which helped our hitting tonight.  Hanah has the emotional drive that we need right now, and it was great to see it tonight.  She gives our team confidence when she is on the floor."

Caitlin Andrade recorded 50 assists and nine digs in the match.  Katie Turner, starting at libero, recorded a career-best 24 digs and two service aces in the match.  Casino ended the match with nine digs and two aces.

Hitting wise for SJSU, Krista Miller had nine kills, while Brianna Amian added seven.  Sarah Griest had five kills, while Taylor Japhet had three and Sarah McAtee two.

In other matches at the SJSU Tournament Friday, Seattle defeated Cal State Northridge, 25-19, 24-26, 17-25, 25-17, 17-5 and Cal State Bakersfield 25-20, 25-16, 25-23.

Action continues Saturday with three matches beginning with San Jose State and Seattle at 11 a.m.  Portland State and Cal State Northridge play at 1 p.m., followed by the Spartans and Cal State Bakersfield at 7 p.m.
