Tsukano Records First Double-Double

Berkeley, Calif.-For the first time in her career, Kristal Tsukano recorded a double-double and led the Spartan volleyball team in kills and digs.

Tsukano led San Jose State with 11 kills on 39 swings.  She added 18 digs for her first collegiate double-double.  Tsukano also had three assists in the loss.

In the first match of the Molten/Hilton Garden Inn Classic hosted by California, San Jose State fell to Eastern Washington in four sets, 21-25, 25-22, 26-24, 25-20. 

The Spartans won the first set after never trailing.  The team led by as many as eight and won the set on an Eagle service error. 

In set two, San Jose State got out to an early 8-3 lead and the two teams went back-and-forth before Eastern Washington took a 17-15 lead on a service ace.  The Spartans could never any closer than three points in the 25-22 loss.

After intermission, the Spartans got down early in the third set, 17-13, but fought back to take an 18-17 lead on a Courtney Zellmer kill.  The team continued to battle with the Eagles and had a 23-19 lead on a Tsukano kill.  However, Eastern Washington scored seven of the next eight points to win 26-24.

The Spartans got out to an early 7-2 lead in the final set and held the lead at 17-15.  After an Eagle timeout, the Spartans led 18-15, but Eastern Washington then scored five points for the 20-19 lead.  San Jose State tied the score at 20-20, but the Eagles scored the final five points to win the match.

Other contributing for the Spartans included Taylor Japhet who also had a team-high 11 kills.  Kylie Miraldi added nine kills and three block assists, while Krista Miller had a season-best seven kills.  Zellmer added four kills, a career-best five service aces and 14 digs.  Alex Akana had four kills, two aces, one dig and one block.

Setting time was split between two Spartan players.  Caitlin Andrade started the match and had 18 assists, three digs and a kill.  Asia Casino played three sets and had 21 assists, five digs and three blocks.

Defensively, Thao Pham started at libero and had eight digs and an assist.  Katie Turner contributed eight digs, two assists and an ace.  Devan Wong played in the fourth set and had three digs.

San Jose State now faces #13 California Saturday evening at 6 p.m., in the final match of the Molten/Hilton Garden Inn Classic.
