Boise, Idaho-Middle blockers Alex Akana and Mary Alice O'Reilly recorded double-digit kills for the San Jose State volleyball team as the Spartans lost a close five-set match to Boise State, 23-25, 25-19, 25-19, 24-26, 16-14, Friday night at the Boise State Invitational

Akana recorded a career-best 17 kills as she hit .294 for the match with her 17 kills on 34 attempts and seven errors.  She added five block assists and three digs for the match.  O'Reilly hit .400 with 13 kills on 25 attempts and three hitting errors.  She led the team with six block assists.

Setter Michaela Leonard had her second double-double of the day with 49 assists and 13 digs.  Hanah Blume led the team with a career-high 25 digs, while Kiely Pieper added 14 digs.

Samantha O'Connell had nine kills, nine digs and three blocks, while Krista Miller recorded seven kills, five digs and four blocks.

San Jose State won the first set 25-23, in a set that featured 13 tied scores and eight lead changes.   The Spartans trailed 23-20 before a kill by O'Reilly gave the point and serve back to San Jose State, and Blume served the final five points to give the Spartans and early 1-0 lead.

Boise State won the next two sets by identical 25-19 scores.  In set four, the teams were tied at 24-24 before an O'Reilly kill and a Bronco hitting error gave the set to San Jose State at 26-24.  Set five saw four lead changes and 10 ties including ties at 13-13 and 14-14 before consecutive hitting errors gave Boise State the 16-14 win and the match.

"We competed hard in this very competitive match," said Spartan head coach Oscar Crespo.  "We received serve well, and our middles put up good numbers for us.  Alex had a good match and bounced back nicely from last weekend.  I feel very confident in where we are three weeks into the season.

"This match came down to a couple of hitting errors and errant attacks that didn't drop late in the match.  What had been working early in the match was not going down late in the match.  We need to clean up our errors and be smarter on with our attacks and where we put the ball."

San Jose State finishes play at the Boise State Invitational Saturday morning with a match against Southern Utah at 11 a.m. MDT/10 a.m. PDT.
