SPARTANS OPEN THE HOME SCHEDULE THIS WEEKEND:  After spending the past two weekends in the state of Arizona, the San Jose State volleyball team opens the home portion of the schedule this weekend with two matches in the San Jose State/Santa Clara Invitational.  The Spartans host North Dakota Friday night and UC Santa Barbara Saturday night.  Both matches will be played in Spartan Gym, located on the corner of Fourth and San Carlos Streets.

LIVE STATS:  Both matches this weekend will have live stats, and links are available on the Spartan website at www.SJSUSpartans.com and go to “Live Stats.”

TICKETS:  Tickets for Friday’s and Saturday’s match are available at the door the day of the match or payable through Ticketmaster.com.  Prices are $5 for adults, $3 for youth 12 and under and $1 for club players in their jersey.

ABOUT NORTH DAKOTA:  The Fighting Sioux begin the week with a 4-2 record and host North Dakota State Tuesday night before traveling to California for three matches this weekend.  The team won its own tournament last weekend, sweeping Montana, Green Bay and Southern Utah.  Head coach Ashley Hardee is in his third at the school with a 47-11 record.  Senior outside hitter Annika Smed was named the Most Valuable Player of the UND Classic after tallying 26 kills, 24 digs and eight blocks during the tournament.


    North Dakota won the only meeting between the two teams, 3-0, last season at the North Dakota Classic.

ABOUT UC SANTA BARBARA:  The Gauchos enter the weekend with a 2-4 overall record after going 1-2 at Pepperdine this past weekend, defeating Georgia 3-1, but falling to Miami, 0-3, and Pepperdine, 0-3.  Head coach Kathy Gregory is in her 37th year at the school and has recorded the fifth-most victories in Division I history with 833.  Stacey Schmidt leads the team in kills with 84, hitting at .344 and blocks with 20.  


    UC Santa Barbara leads the overall series, 20-6, and won the last meeting, 3-2, in 2006 at the USF Powerade/Asics Classic.

SAN JOSE STATE HEAD COACH:  Oscar Crespo is in his fifth season as head coach at his alma mater.  A 1990 graduate, Crespo was named head coach in March of 2007 as the program’s sixth head coach.  He has a 38-86 coaching record in four seasons.

LAST WEEK:  The Spartans went 1-2 at the Fiesta Bowl Tournament hosted by Northern Arizona.  The team lost to the Lumberjacks (0-3) and New Mexico (1-3) but defeated Hampton 3-0.  In the win, the Spartans hit a season-high .427 with 43 kills on 75 attempts and just 11 errors.  Alex Akana led the team with nine kills and was 9-for-11 with no errors and a .818 hitting percentage.

MILLER NAMED ALL-TOURNAMENT:  After a strong tournament, Krista Miller was named to the Fiesta Bowl All-Tournament team.  She led the team in kills against Northern Arizona with nine and added nine kills and nine digs against New Mexico.  She added seven digs and five blocks against the Lumberjacks and recorded seven kills in a win over Hampton.

DOUBLE-DOUBLES:  Three Spartan players have recorded four double-doubles this season.  Savanah Leaf recorded her first two collegiate double-doubles with 11 kills and 14 digs against Denver and 21 kills and 14 digs against Arizona State.  Taylor Japhet had her first double-double of the season with 19 kills and 10 digs against Denver.  Caitlin Andrade had 33 assists and 12 digs versus New Mexico.

LEAF MAKING IMPRESSION:  In her first season in a Spartan uniform, freshman Savanah Leaf is making an immediate impact on the court.  She led the Spartans with 21 kills in a win over Pac-12 foe Arizona State and with 10 kills against New Mexico.  Leaf recorded double-doubles against Denver and Arizona State.  For the season, she is averaging 2.77 kills and 2.50 digs per set.

ANDRADE CLIMBING UP CAREER ASSISTS LEADERS:  Caitlin Andrade currently ranks 10th all-time at San Jose State in assists with 1,995.  She needs 97 assists to move into ninth place and would need 3,487 assists over the next two years to break the record of 5,482 set by Michelle Sarkees from 1996-99.

2011 WAC TOURNAMENT:
  The 2011 WAC Volleyball Tournament will be held Nov. 21-23 at the Orleans
Arena in Las Vegas, Nev., and will include the top six teams in the regular-season standings. The championship match will be televised live on ESPNU.


UP NEXT:  The Spartans return to the road for four matches at the Hilton Stockton Invitational hosted by the University of the Pacific.  The team plays Pacific Thursday night, CSU Bakersfield on Friday, and Loyola Marymount and UC Riverside on Saturday.
