Akana Records 10 Kills In Loss To #11 Stanford

Stockton, Calif.-Freshman Alex Akana led the Spartans with 10 kills, but #11 Stanford was too much for San Jose State as the team lost 25-12, 25-20, 25-17, Saturday afternoon in the consolation match of the 31st Community Bankers Classic hosted by the University of the Pacific.

Akana hit .429 for the match her 10 kills coming on 21 attempts and just one hitting error.  She also added a block for the Spartans.  Teammate Taylor Japhet added six kills and a block, while Caitlin Andrade had four kills on seven attempts to go with her 20 kills and six digs.

Others contributing included Krista Miller with four kills on 12 attempts and two digs.  Kristal Tsukano had five digs and three assists, while Katie Turner recorded six digs, one kill and one block assist.  Kylie Miraldi had one kill, one block and one assist.  Thao Pham and Courtney Zellmer each had three digs on the night.

"I was pleased with our effort today," said San Jose State head coach Oscar Crespo. "We stayed composed and did not get nervous playing one of the top teams in the nation.  If we stay composed and play like we did tonight, we can be successful during the WAC season.  We just need to do the little things well, serve and pass, to help us get better and be successful."

After losing the first set 25-12, the Spartans showed better fire-power in the second set.  Despite being down 20-13, San Jose State used three Andrade kills and various other plays to get within four at 24-20 before the Cardinal won the set on a Spartan service error.  In the second set, San Jose State hit .310 with 11 kills, four by Akana and three by Andrade.

The third set was close for the first 14 points as the two teams were tied at 7-7.  Stanford used a small run to jump out to 11-7, but the Spartans closed to within one at 11-10 on a Japhet kill.  Stanford then scored four of the next five points to take a 15-11 lead heading into the media timeout.  San Jose State stayed within four at 17-13, but the Cardinal scored in the next four points and took control of the set and won the match.

San Jose State next plays at Saint Mary's this Wednesday evening at 7 p.m.  Live statistics will be available through the Gaels website at www.smcgaels.com.
