Volleyball Headed To Boise State Invitational

SPARTANS PLAY IN FINAL NON-CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT:  San Jose State takes its 3-3 record to Boise this weekend for the Boise State Invitational.  The Spartans play UC Irvine and Boise State on Friday and Southern Utah on Saturday.  The team went 2-1 last week at the Lonestar Showdown where San Jose State swept Northwestern State and Texas-Pan American and lost to host Texas Tech.

ABOUT UC IRVINE:  The Anteaters enter the week with a 2-5 overall record and went 1-2 last weekend with a 3-1 win over Colgate.  Head coach Paula Weishoff is in her fourth year at the school and, this past summer, was an assistant coach for the silver medal U.S. Olympic Women’s Volleyball National Team.  Aly Squires leads the team with 99 kills, 3.96 per set, while libera Kristin Winkler has a team-best 139 digs, 5.56 ps. San Jose State leads the series, 20-12-1.
ABOUT BOISE STATE:  The Broncos begin the week with a 2-4 overall record and host Eastern Washington Wednesday night before this weekend’s tournament.  The team has wins over Gonzaga (3-0) and Morgan State (3-0).  Head coach Shawn Garus is in his fourth year at the helm of the program.  Alyssa Gammel leads the team with 83 kills, 3.95 ps, while Brittany Reardon is hitting .369 with 38 kills and 12 blocks.  Kersti Whitney has a team-best 85 digs, 4.05 ps. San Jose State leads the all-time series 16-7.
ABOUT SOUTHERN UTAH:  The Thunderbirds enter the tournament with a 3-4 overall record after winning three of its four matches last weekend.  The team has a three-match winning streak with sweeps of Kennesaw State, Savannah State and UNC Asheville.  Head coach Debby Baker is in her fourth year at the school.  Ana Mailoto leads the team in kills with 74, 3.36 ps, and digs at 59, 2.68 ps. San Jose State won the only meeting between the two schools, 3-0, at the 1988 Lady Ute Invitational.
SAN JOSE STATE HEAD COACH:  Oscar Crespo is in his sixth season as head coach at his alma mater.  A 1990 graduate, Crespo was named head coach in March of 2007 as the program’s sixth head coach.  He has a 51-102 coaching record in four seasons.
LAST WEEKEND RECAP:  The Spartans finished 2-1 at the Lonestar Showdown hosted by Texas Tech.  The team swept Northwestern State and Texas-Pan American while falling to the Red Raiders in straight sets.  Hanah Blume and Mary Alice O’Reilly were named to the all-tournament team.
BEST BLOCKING NIGHT SINCE 2007:  The Spartans recorded 17 blocks in the first match of the season for the best blocking night in five years.  The team had 1 solo block and 32 block assists against Oral Roberts, the most since 2007 when the Spartans had 19.5 blocks against San Francisco.  Last season, the Spartans had 16 blocks in a win over UC Riverside.
DOUBLE-DOUBLES:  Four Spartans have recorded nine double-doubles this season, led by Hanah Blume with five.  Setter Michaela Leonard recorded double-doubles in her first and third collegiate matches every played.  Samantha O’Connell recorded her first this season against Canisius, while Krista Miller ended the Lonestar Showdown with a double-double against Texas-Pan American
NEW SETTER:  Freshman Michaela Leonard stepped into the setting role for the Spartans this season.  She is averaging 11.81 assists per set which leads the Western Athletic Conference.  Leonard recorded a season-best 49 in a win over Buffalo.  She also recorded her first collegiate double-double with 47 assists and 12 digs against Canisius.  Leonard had four block assists versus Oral Roberts.
SAME-SET MATCHES:  In the six matches San Jose State has played this year, the Spartans played three four-set matches the first weekend, and three three-set matches in Texas.  The Spartans were 1-2 the first weekend and 2-1 last weekend.
2012 WAC TOURNAMENT:  The 2012 WAC Volleyball Tournament will be held Nov. 19-21 at the Convocation Center on the UTSA Campus.  The top-eight seeds advance to the three-day tournament.
