Serving and Hitting Tough For Volleyball In Loss At Pacific

Stockton, Calif.-Tough serving by Pacific and a rough hitting night for the Spartans contributed to San Jose State's loss to the Tigers, 25-19, 25-15, 25-19, Friday night at the 31st Community Bankers Classic in Stockton.

San Jose State hit just .051 for the match and recorded just 26 kills in the match.  Taylor Japhet led the team with eight kills, while five others had three kills each including Kristal Tsukano who rotated all the way around during the match.

"Taylor did a good job for us tonight," said San Jose State head coach Oscar Crespo.  "Kristal also did a nice job and is trying hard to adjust to her new position."

Pacific served 13 aces in the match, compared to just two for the Spartans, both by Katie Turner.  San Jose State also had 11 service errors on the night.

"We need to be focused on what we are doing when we serve and serve-receive," said Crespo.  "Pacific served very tough tonight and made it difficult for us to hit.  Good passing leads to good hitting, and we just need to pass better in order to get better."

Tsukano led the Spartans with 12 digs, while Courtney Zellmer recorded 10 digs.  Thao Pham, playing libero the entire match, added seven digs, while Caitlin Andrade came off the bench for seven digs.

In the second set, the Spartans jumped out to a 7-4 lead and battled with Pacific for the first 24 points.  The two teams were tied at 12-12 before the Tigers scored seven straight points to take a 19-12 lead and won the set 25-15.

The third set was similar to the second set as the Tigers had a 4-2 lead, the Spartan scored four straight points for a 6-4 lead.  The two teams battled back and forth and tied the score at 10-10 before Pacific scored 10 of the next 11 points to take a 20-11 lead.

San Jose State did not give up though and started chipping away at the lead.  The team got within six at 24-19 in a run which included three Andrade kills.

The Spartans will play in the consolation match Saturday afternoon at 5 p.m. against Santa Clara County foe #11 Stanford.  #5 Florida and Pacific will play in the nightcap for the championship.
