Flagstaff, Ariz.-San Jose State hit a season-best .427 against Hampton in the team's final match of the Fiesta Bowl Tournament as the Spartans won 25-14, 25-8, 25-12, Saturday afternoon. The Spartans fell in the first match of the day, 22-25, 25-17, 25-17, 25-21 to New Mexico.
In the win over Hampton, Alex Akana led the team in hitting with nine kills and a .818 hitting percentage. She recorded her nine kills on 11 attempts with no hitting errors. Kylie Miraldi hit .545 for the match with seven kills on 11 attempts and just one error. Savanah Leaf added eight kills and six digs in the win.
For the match, 13 players say action in the match including Kiely Pieper and Capri Tirrell who made their collegiate debuts.
San Jose State tied a tournament record for fewest points allowed in a set with eight in set #2. The Spartans hit .444 in that set, while Hampton hit -.095.
"We played better today and finished off the day with a lot of poise which was nice to see from this team," said Spartan head coach Oscar Crespo. "We are growing as a team, especially in our mental game on the court. We are making changes while on the court instead of having to work on them in practice"
Against New Mexico Saturday morning, San Jose State won the first set, 25-22, as the team took advantage of a Lobo hitting error and ball handling error and a Krista Miller kill to win the set.
New Mexico jumped out to an early 11-4 lead in the second set, and the Spartans could get no closer than three points in the 25-17 loss. The third set was similar to the second as San Jose State led 8-7, but New Mexico again won 25-17. The fourth set featured 11 ties and five lead changes as New Mexico won 25-21.
Caitlin Andrade recorded her first double-double of the season with 33 assists and 12 digs in the match and added two blocks. Leaf led the team in kills with 10 and added five blocks, one solo and four assists. Taylor Japhet, Krista Miller and Miraldi each had nine kills. Miller also had nine digs and four block assists, while Katie Turner had seven digs. Mary Alice O'Reilly came off the bench for three kills and three blocks, while Asia Casino recorded eight digs.
San Jose State opens the home portion of the schedule next weekend with the San Jose State/Santa Clara Invitational. The Spartans host North Dakota on Friday, September 9, at 7 p.m., followed by UC Santa Barbara on Saturday at 6 p.m. Both matches will be played at Spartan Gym, located on the corner of Fourth and San Carlos Streets.
