San Jose-Freshman Hanah Blume had a team-high eight kills, and freshman Sarah Griest hit .385 for San Jose State Thursday at the SJSU/SMC Tournament at Spartan Gym. #14 UCLA won the match 25-13, 25-18, 25-17.
Blume recorded her eight kills on 28 attempts and added a dig in the match. Griest hit .385 with six kills on 13 attempts with only one error. She also had two block assists and an assist.
"Hanah is playing mature right now and really nice to see right now," said Spartan head coach Oscar Crespo. "She wants the ball in crunch time, and I think she got better as the match went on tonight. But she also knows that she still has room for improvement.
"Sarah was very strong and steady tonight. She executed well tonight, especially against the 14th-ranked team and their big block. "
Alex Akana also hit .385 with six kills on 13 attempts and only error. She and Taylor Japhet led the team with three block assists each. Brianna Amian added two kills and two block assists, while Sarah McAtee had three kills.
Caitlin Andrade led the team with 25 assists and eight digs, while Courtney Zellmer had seven digs and two assists. Katie Turner had four digs.
The SJSU/SMC Tournament continues Friday with two matches at Spartan Gym. #14 UCLA and Saint Mary's play at 5 p.m., followed by the Spartans and UC Riverside at 7 p.m. On Saturday, UCLA and UC Riverside play at 10 a.m. at Spartan Gym, with the final match at Saint Mary's with the Gaels and UC Riverside playing at 7 p.m.
