Volleyball Hosts SJSU/SMC Tournament This Week

After starting the season at the North Dakota Classic last weekend, the San Jose State volleyball team opens the home portion of the schedule this week with the SJSU/SMC Tournament, Sept. 1-4. Teams featured include Saint Mary’s, #14 UCLA and UC Riverside.

San Jose State opens the tournament against Saint Mary’s Wednesday night at 7 p.m. The Gales enter the match with a 2-1 record after defeating UNLV and Sacred Heart but fell at Long Beach State, 3-2. Head coach Rob Browning is in his sixth season at the school. Megan York leads the team with 42 kills and 48 digs, while Shannon Lowell is the team leader in blocks with 19, 1.58 per set.

The Spartans then face #14 UCLA Thursday night at 7 p.m. The Bruins enter the tournament with a 2-1 record after wins over Kansas State and #22 San Diego but losing at #5 Hawaii. Head coach Mike Sealy is in his first year at the program. Dicey McGraw leads the team in kills with 34, while Katie Camp is the team leader in blocks with 13. Lainey Gera leads the Bruins in digs with 45.

On Friday, UCLA and Saint Mary’s face off at 5 p.m., followed the Spartans and UC Riverside. The Highlanders enter the tournament with an 0-3 record after falling to Santa Clara, Oregon and Fresno State. Head coach Ron Larsen is in his season year at the helm of the program. Kelly Simpson leads the team with 33 kills and seven blocks and 32 digs.

San Jose State begins the week with an 0-3 record after losing to North Dakota, Gonzaga and Drake at the North Dakota Classic. Courtney Zellmer was named to the all-tournament team after recording a career-best 35 digs against Gonzaga.

All matches for the tournament will be played at Spartan Gym, located in YUH, on the corner of Fourth and San Carlos Streets. Ticket prices for Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday are $5 for adults, $3 for youth 12 and younger, and $1 for club players in their jersey, at door only. Friday night’s doubleheader will be $7 for adults and $5 for youth 12 and younger. Parking is available in the Fourth Street Garage, directly across from the gym. Patrons must purchase a permit as parking restrictions are enforced 24 hours a day.
