Volleyball Falls To Weber State In Five Sets

Tucson, Ariz.Niki Clement recorded her first double-double of the year with a season-best 22 kills and 10 digs, but the San Jose State volleyball team lost a hard-fought match to Weber State, 16-25, 25-20, 25-22, 23-25, 15-11, at the Sheraton Four Points Wildcat Classic hosted by Arizona.

Clement recorded her 22 kills on 52 attempts and added two block assists and an assist. Her two block assists now give her 212 career block assists and ties her for 10th all-time with Christa Cook. Clement is just nine block assists behind her teammate Colleen Burke who is ninth at 223.

Two other Spartans recorded double-digit kills in the match. Kelly Crow had 16 kills on 44 attempts and added with digs and two block assists. Nia Freeman added 12 kills on 24 attempts and had two block assists.

“Overall, I was happy with our performance,” said San Jose State head coach Oscar Crespo. “We had too many service errors (11) today and only one service ace. We gave our opponent too many points. Our serving and blocking has to get better.

“I am pleased with the way Niki and Kelly played. They both hit around .230 which is good for them.”

Others contributing for the Spartans included Brianna Amian who had eight kills, 13 digs, two assists and two blocks. Emily Burke had 54 assists, seven digs, three kills and a service ace. Kristal Tsukano contributed 15 digs and two assists. Colleen Burke had five kills, two digs, two block assists and an assist.

San Jose State is now 1-2 on the season. The Spartans open the home portion of its schedule this Monday, Labor Day, with a non-conference match against St. John’s. First serve is set for 10:30 a.m., at Spartan Gym.
