SPARTANS TRAVEL TO TEXAS: After opening the 2012 season with a 1-2 record at the UB Invitational, San Jose State travels to Lubbock, Texas, this weekend for the Lonestar Showdown hosted by Texas Tech. The Spartans will face Northwestern State, Texas Tech and Texas-Pan American over the two days.

ABOUT NORTHWESTERN STATE: The Lady Demons enter the weekend with a 1-2 record after defeating Tennessee-Martin, 3-1, but falling to Arkansas, 3-1, and Kansas, 3-0, last weekend. Co-head coaches Hugh and Stephanie Hernesman are in their third season directing the program. Stacy DiFrancesco leads the team with 34 kills, 3.09 per set, while Keelle Arneson leads the team with 47 digs, 4.27 ps.
San Jose State won the only meeting, 3-0, at the 2007 ASU/Bancorp South Classic hosted by Arkansas State.
ABOUT TEXAS TECH: The Red Raiders enter the weekend with a 4-0 record after winning the Boston College Invitational last weekend. Head coach Don Flora is in his second year at the school. Outside hitter Meghan Stacy leads the team with 38 kills, 2.53 per set. Libero Rachel Brummitt was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honors after being named the MVP at the tournament. She is averaging 4.25 digs ps.
San Jose State leads the overall series, 2-0, after winning, 3-2 last year in Spartan Gym. Alex Akana led the team with 17 kills and hit .500 for the match (17-3-28), while Samantha O’Connell recorded her first collegiate double-double with 14 kills and 15 digs. San Jose State won the first meeting, 3-1, at the Lady Ute Invitational to start the 1988 season.
ABOUT TEXAS-PAN AMERICAN: The Broncs enter the weekend with a 1-3 record after defeating Savannah State last weekend. The team fell to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 3-1, Tuesday night. Head coach Brian Yale is in his second season at the helm of the program. Michelle McNamee leads the team with 33 kills, 2.06 ps, while Juri Franzen had 79 digs, 4.94 ps.
San Jose State won the only meeting between the two teams, 3-0, at the 2002 Baden Thanksgiving Tournament in Long Beach, Calif.
SAN JOSE STATE HEAD COACH: Oscar Crespo is in his sixth season as head coach at his alma mater. A 1990 graduate, Crespo was named head coach in March of 2007 as the program’s sixth head coach. He has a 49-101 coaching record in four seasons.
LAST WEEKEND RECAP: The Spartans finished 1-2 at the UB Invitational, defeating Buffalo, 3-1, but falling to Oral Roberts, 1-3, and Canisius, 1-3. Hanah Blume was named to the UB Invitational All-Tournament team after recording double-doubles in all three matches. Mary Alice O’Reilly hit . 682 (17-2-22) in a win over Buffalo and had nine blocks in a loss to Oral Roberts.
BEST BLOCKING NIGHT SINCE 2007: The Spartans recorded 17 blocks in the first match of the season for the best blocking night in five years. The team had 1 solo block and 32 block assists against Oral Roberts, the most since 2007 when the Spartans had 19.5 blocks against San Francisco. Last season, the Spartans had 16 blocks in a win over UC Riverside.
DOUBLE-DOUBLES: Three Spartan players recorded three double-doubles this past weekend. Hanah Blume had double-doubles in all three matches at the tournament. Setter Michaela Leonard recorded double-doubles in her first and third collegiate matches every played. Samantha O’Connell ended the tournament with a double-double against Canisius.
NEW SETTER: Freshman Michaela Leonard stepped into the setting role last weekend. She averaged 11.58 assists per set and recorded 49 in a win over Buffalo. She also recorded her first collegiate double-double with 47 assists and 12 digs against Canisius. Leonard also had four block assists versus Oral Roberts.
WE LIKE FOUR-SET MATCHES: All three Spartan matches last weekend went to four sets. No match established a pattern as to which sets the team likes to win.
2012 WAC TOURNAMENT: The 2012 WAC Volleyball Tournament will be held Nov. 19-21 at the Convocation Center on the UTSA Campus. The top-eight seeds advance to the three-day tournament.
