O'Reilly's Hitting Helps Volleyball Defeat Buffalo

Buffalo, N.Y.-Mary Alice O'Reilly continued her hot play on Friday as she helped lead San Jose State to 25-22, 25-22, 15-25, 25-20 win over host Buffalo at the UB Invitational.

After leading the Spartans in blocking earlier Friday, O'Reilly showed her hitting prowess in the Spartans' first win of the season.  O'Reilly led the team with 17 kills and hit .682 on 22 attempts and just two hitting errors.  She also recorded five blocks in the match, a career-best three solos and two block assists.

"Mary Alice had a nice day for us," said Spartan head coach Oscar Crespo.  "She and Alex Akana were getting a lot of kills tonight because the defense focused so much on our outsides."

Akana led the Spartan block with six block assists as San Jose State had 12 team blocks for the match.  Samantha O'Connell added four block assists, while Krista Miller recorded three.

Hanah Blume recorded her second double-double of the day with 12 kills and 14 digs.  O'Connell added 12 kills and six digs, while Akana had seven kills and three digs.  Miller added three kills and seven digs, while Sarah Griest recorded two digs and two block assists.

Setter Michaela Leonard was one dig short of her second double-double with 49 assists and nine digs.  Kiely Pieper led the team 16 digs, while Katie Turner added four.

"We created a lot of offense from our defense digging balls and allowing our hitters to terminate balls," said Crespo.  "We continued to dig well in this match and gave quality balls for our setter and hitters.  We played pretty solidly for the entire match except for the third set as it got away from us."

San Jose State finishes play at the UB Invitational on Saturday with a match against Canisius beginning at 2:30 p.m. EDT/11:30 a.m. PDT.
