Volleyball Opens Season At Arizona Tournament; Hosts St. John's On Labor Day

The Spartan volleyball team opens the 2008 season this weekend at the Sheraton Four Points Wildcat Classic hosted by Arizona. The team the returns to San Jose for its home-opener on Monday, September 1, against St. John’s at 10:30 a.m., at Spartan Gym.

San Jose State will play three matches this weekend at the tournament. The team faces Gardner Webb at 12 p.m. and Arizona at 7 p.m. on Friday. The Spartans then play Weber State Saturday morning at 10 a.m. This will be the first meeting with Gardner Webb. Arizona leads the overall series, 3-1-2, and won the last meeting, 3-0, in 2000. San Jose State’s only win of series came in 1979. The Spartans hold a 4-1 series advantage over Weber State and won last year’s meeting, 3-1, at the UVU/La Quinta Inn & Suites Invitational.

The team opens the home portion of the schedule on Labor Day, Monday, September 1, with a 10:30 a.m. match against St. John’s. The Red Storm is in town for the Cal Molten Classic where the team will play California and UC Santa Barbara. The Spartans won the only meeting between the two teams, 3-1, at the PowerBar Invitational at Saint Mary’s on September 5.

San Jose State has opened the home schedule with a Big East Conference team. In 1996, the Spartans defeated Providence, 3-1, at The Event Center.
