Burke, Clement Named Preseason All-WAC

DENVER San Jose State seniors Colleen Burke and Niki Clement were named to the 12-person Preseason All- Western Athletic Conference volleyball team as selected by the conference’s nine head coaches.

Burke was a first team All-WAC selection last season and led the team in hitting with a .343 percentage, the fourth-best in school history. She is second all-time in hitting with a .313 percentage and is on track to record her 1,000th career kill this season to join an elite club at San Jose State. Burke averaged 2.61 kills and 0.70 blocks per game last year.

Clement was a second team All-WAC pick last year. She averaged 3.37 kills and 3.40 digs per game last season. She needs just 12 kills to also join the group of former Spartans with 1,000 or more career kills.

San Jose State opens the 2008 season on Friday, August 29 with matches against Gardner Webb, Arizona and Weber State at the Sheraton Four Points Wildcat Classic in Tucson, Ariz. The Spartans open the home portion of the schedule on Monday, September 1, in a non-conference match against St. John’s at 10:30 a.m., in Spartan Gym.

Hawaii All-American Jamie Houston was named the WAC Preseason Player of the Year. Two Hawaii players joined Houston on the preseason team, juniors Aneli Cubi-Otineru and Amber Kaufman. Both Houston and Cubi-Otineru were first team all-WAC selections last season.

New Mexico State placed the most on the 12-player team with four. Along with seniors Krystal Torres and Amber Simpson, juniors Krista Altermatt and Lindsey Yon earned preseason honors. Simpson, Yon and Torres were all first-team all-WAC selections in 2007.

Chelsea Fowles of Utah State, the 2007 WAC Freshman of the Year, and Idaho’s Haley Larsen both were named to the team. Nevada sophomore Lindsay Baldwin rounded out the preseason squad. Six teams placed at least one player on the preseason all-WAC. Eight players are returning first-team all-WAC honorees.
