The 2010 San Jose State University women's volleyball team is in pre-season camp. With just over one week of training in the books, head coach Oscar Crespo offers his assessment.
Tell us about the start of practice
A: "They (the Spartans) are very productive. They're focused. The newcomers are assimilating well, competing and are pushing our returners. I feel really comfortable and confident that we're building good steps and a good foundation that will pay off the next couple of weeks.
What do you see as areas of improvement?
A: "The greatest improvement, definitely, was made from last season through the spring in our focus in the gym to obtaining goals to be productive, eliminating useless repetitions and being mindful of their execution scoring points and winning on the court. That has improved, I'd say, 180 degrees from where we finished the season.
From what you've seen so far, can this team be more physical and/or more athletic?
A: "I would say so. Their mental focus is heightened greater. There is a greater ability to execute. They're more physical, able to score better, because they're much more focused on their attack, their roles and their understanding of where we are trying to go. The physicality has improved. The addition of our newcomers has given that to us. One year for the freshmen that played (in 2009) definitely solidified their desire to get better."
What's ahead with the next week of preseason camp?
A: "Cleaning up our offense and making it more precise. We've had good involvement from our middles. They were productive last fall and very much in the spring.
"We've been very defensive-oriented the first three days of camp to give that concrete foundation of ball-handling."
