The 2017 San José State volleyball team kicked off the season on Wednesday, August 9, with the first practices of the year. The team got on the court around 9 a.m. to start the season.
Besides getting in practices for the season, the volleyball program is hosting Tropical Delights, a Tommy Bahama Fashion Show, on Sunday, August 13 at 11:30 a.m. A few tickets are still available. The Spartans will compete for the first time on Saturday, August 19, with the Blue vs. Gold scrimmage beginning at 2:30 p.m. inside Spartan Gym. Fans can come see if head coach Jolene Shepardson can guide her team to victory for the second consecutive season.
San José State opens the 2017 season by hosting the Spartan Invitational on Friday, August 25. After matches featuring Pepperdine against Utah Valley (2 p.m.) and Fresno State against Utah Valley (4:30 p.m.), the Spartans will play Pepperdine to start the year at 7 p.m. The next day, SJSU travels to San Francisco for a match with the Dons beginning at 7 p.m.
The team then goes on the road for the next two weeks, first to Southern California to play at UC Riverside, at Cal State Fullerton and against Howard. They then travel to Des Moines, Iowa, for the Drake Invitational to face Omaha, Drake and Montana.
The Spartans then co-host a tournament with Santa Clara on September 15 and 16. The team travels to Santa Clara for a match with Kansas on the 15th before returning to Spartan Gym that night for a match with Idaho. The Spartans and Broncos then face each other in Spartan Gym on the 16th for the first time since the 2008 season.
San José State opens the Mountain West portion of the schedule with four road matches at Nevada, Air Force, San Diego State and Fresno State. The team opens the home portion of the MW schedule on October 5 against UNLV.
