Volleyball Starts Practice for 2016 Season

Aug. 9, 2016

The San José State volleyball team began practice for the 2016 season Tuesday, bright and early at 6 a.m.

Fans have two chances on Saturday to see the team.  This Saturday, August 13, the volleyball and beach volleyball programs are hosting the Tropical Delights Fashion Show beginning at 11:30 a.m.  More details can be found at http://www.sjsuspartans.com/sports/w-volley/spec-rel/062116aaa.html.

The team will then take the court in Spartan Gym for a Blue/Gold scrimmage on Saturday, beginning at 5 p.m.  Admission is free for your first chance to see the team on the newly refinished Spartan Gym floor.

San José State opens the 2016 season by hosting the Spartan Invitational inside Spartan Gym on August 26 and 27.  The Spartans welcome UMass Lowell, Providence and Manhattan to Yosh Uchida Hall.

The Spartans then play the next three weekends on the road at tournaments.  The team travels to Orem, Utah, to play at the Utah Valley Tournament, September 2 and 3.  San José State starts the tournament with a match against Southern Utah who is coached by former Spartan head coach Craig Choate.  SJSU faces North Texas and Utah Valley on Saturday.

The team then travels to Houston, Texas, for matches on September 9 and 10.  The Spartans open the tournament against host Houston and versus Louisiana Monroe on Friday and Houston Baptist on Saturday.

The final non-conference tournament finds the Spartans in San Diego at the USD/SDSU Invitational.  In a throwback of sorts, the team plays three former Big West Conference foes with Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton on September 16 and UC Santa Barbara on September 17.

San José State begins Mountain West play on the road, facing two of the top three-teams from the 2015 season.  The Spartans play at Wyoming on September 22 to start the conference season, followed by an afternoon match at defending champion Colorado State on September 24.

The Spartans open the home portion of the MW schedule on Thursday, September 29, against New Mexico, and continue at home with a Saturday match against UNLV.  After road trips to Nevada (October 6) and San Diego State (October 8), San José State returns home for four consecutive matches beginning with Boise State on October 13.

The Air Force match on October 15 has been designated as Alumni Match.  Plans are underway to honor the 2001 NCAA Tournament team that defeated Santa Clara, 3-2, in the first round of the tournament before falling to Stanford in round two.  Plans are also being developed to honor one or more former Spartan volleyball players, with that announcement to be made at a later date.

Defending conference champion Colorado State returns to Spartan Gym on Thursday, October 20, followed by Wyoming on October 22.

The final three home matches are San Diego State on November 3, Nevada on November 5, and Fresno State on November 22.  The Spartans face Utah State and Fresno State only once on the schedule.

Admission to all home matches is free with doors to the gym opening one hour prior to first serve. Thursday matches begin at 6 p.m., while Saturday matches have a 1 p.m. start time.
