Meet the Spartans - Out of State Freshmen

With the start of volleyball practice just about a month away, we are going to introduce all the new players San José State fans will see on the court this season.  This four-week series will showcase the freshmen out-of-state players, California freshmen, transfers and international players who will be on the court for first-year Spartan head coach Jolene Shepardson.

This week, we bring you two freshmen from out of state - Summer Avery from Tucson, Ariz., and Jamie Hirai from Honolulu, Hawaii.

Avery played the past four varsity seasons at Tucson High School.  She recorded 426 kills, 4.1 per set, and 219 digs her senior year.  Avery was the 2014 Tucson Citizen Southern Arizona Player of the Year, a first team all-division honoree in Division II and a first team All-Arizona Daily Star selection as a senior.  She played for club for Zona VB Club.

"Summer is a ray of sunshine to everyone who comes in contact with her.  She has impressed me with her maturity and her incredible resolve to become a great player.  She is going to be a hard person to stop on the outside," said Shepardson.

Hirai comes to the mainland after playing four years at Mid-Pacific Institute.  An outside hitter in high school, she received first-team All-Interscholastic League of Hawaii honors her senior year.  Hirai was selected to play for the South team at the 2013 6th Annual O16 Senior Invitational.  She played club for Rainbow Volleyball Club.

"Jamie is a driven person who knows what she wants.  I love how she won't stop until she reaches her goal.  She got my attention and will frustrate our opponents with her determined attitude," said Shepardson.

Coming next week - our newest freshmen from California!
