Fort Collins, Colo.—San José State fell to at #9 Colorado State 3-0 (26-24, 25-14, 25-14) Thursday night in a Mountain West match at Moby Arena.
The Spartans gave the Rams all they could handle in the first set, jumping out to an early 8-3 lead. Colorado State slowly chipped away at the lead, tying the set at 12-12. Both teams battled before San José State took a 19-18 lead and had two set points at 24-22 and 24-23. Colorado State scored the final five points of the set to win 26-24.
After hitting .190 in the first set, Colorado State found their groove in the final two sets, hitting .308 and .500 respectively and winning each set 25-14.
For the match, San José State hit .039 and had five blocks compare to the Rams who hit .300 and recorded 10 blocks.
“Tonight we came out executing the game plan and siding out well, but unfortunately, we couldn’t close out the first set,” said Spartan head coach Jolene Shepardson. “Our serving remained strong throughout the match, and we were able to earn points. However, our passing, setting and attacking was far too inconsistent in our reception game for us to stay in the match.”
San José State returns to Spartan Gym this Saturday for the final home match of 2014. The Spartans host Wyoming with first serve at 6 p.m. Senior Kiely Pieper will be honored prior to the match.
