Volleyball Falls 3-1 At San Diego State

San Diego, Calif.--Nandyala Gama and Tyanna Roy led the Spartans in hitting as the San José State volleyball team fell 3-1 (18-25, 25-12, 25-19, 25-13) at San Diego State Thursday night in a Mountain West match.

Gama led the Spartans with nine kills, while Roy added eight kills.  Gama added three digs and three blocks, 1 solo and two assists, and Roy had four digs and four blocks, three solo and one assist. 

Jamie Hirai found herself playing in the front row for the Spartans and recorded five kills on 13 attempts and added 11 digs.  Breann Robinson, playing on the right side, recorded four block assists during the match.  Yavianliz Rosado had a team-best 17 digs.

The Spartans started the match strong by winning the first set 25-18.  After the two teams traded the lead back-and-forth early in the set, San José State took the lead for good at 10-9 on a bad Aztec set.  The Spartans led by as many as eight three times including 24-16, before winning the set on an Aztec hitting error.

Over the next three sets, the Spartans had the lead just twice (2nd and 4th sets) and fell 25-12, 25-19 and 25-13. After hitting .212 in the first set, the team hit just .072 over the final three sets (24-17-97).

"I was proud of the way we execute the game plan and competed in the first set," said Spartan head coach Jolene Shepardson.  "This year has been about learning how to persevere through hard times and sticking together as a team.  Whatever future challenges we face, I want us to embrace each one head on and learn to see clearly through them."
