San José, Calif.--In a match that featured 14 lead changes and 38 tied scores, the San José State volleyball team battled with Nevada Saturday afternoon before falling 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-22) in a Mountain West match at Spartan Gym.
Neither team led by more than four points in any set, and both started the match hitting the ball well. Nevada won the first set by hitting .424, and San José State hit .295. The Spartans had tied the set at 23-23 on a Thaliana Grajeda before the Wolf Pack scored the final two points.
The two teams traded the lead seven times in the second set, the final at 22-22. A Nevada kill and back-to-back Wolf Pack blocks gave Nevada a 25-22 win.
The third set was similar to the second set second set with four lead changes and 16 tied scores. San José State tied the score at 21-21 before Nevada scored four of the next five points to win 25-22.
Latahevai Lousi recorded her best hitting match of the season as she led the team in kills with 15. She hit a season-best .429 as she recorded her 15 kills on 28 attempts and only three errors. She added two block assists and a dig.
Nandyala Gama was the only other Spartan to hit above .200 as she recorded 10 kills on 25 attempts with four errors (.240). She led the team in blocks with five, one solo and four assists. Gama moved into sixth-place on the San José State season block assists list with 114, moving past Melissa Myers (111 in 1998) and Joslynn Gallop (112 in 2000). Gama needs one block assists for fifth place and three more for fourth place.
The Spartans go on the road next week for matches at Air Force on Thursday, November 10, and at Boise State on Saturday, November 12.
