San José, Calif.-- Freshmen Latahevai Lousi and Thaliana Grajeda were two of San José State's top performers Thursday night as the Spartan volleyball team defeated San Diego State, 3-1 (25-18, 25-21, 23-25, 25-21) in a Mountain West match at Spartan Gym.
Lousi led all hitters with 15 kills and hit a season-best .387 in the win (15-3-31). She also led the Spartans in blocking with a season-best seven total blocks - one solo block and a season-high six block assists.
Grajeda recorded her best hitting match of the season with a .643 percentage. She recorded 10 kills on 14 attempts and only one error. Grajeda added four block assists in the win.
Nandyala Gama continued her climb up the San José State season block assists lists. She recorded four block assists Thursday night and now has 110 for the season. Gama started the night tied for 10th and is now tied for eighth with Tanya Kamau who recorded 110 in 1998.
San José State dominated every statistical category over the Aztecs. The Spartans hit .202 for the match and outblocked San Diego State 11-8. San José State recorded eight service aces in the win, the most since October 15, led by Luiza Andrade with three.
Kaitlynn Zdroik and Breann Robinson split time at setter as the Spartans shook up the offense. Zdroik recorded a season-high 26 assists and six digs, while Robinson had 15 assists, five digs, one kill and one ace.
San José State improves to 11-14 overall and 4-9 in the MW, while San Diego State falls to 14-12 overall and 6-6 in the conference. The Spartans continue at home this Saturday afternoon with a conference match against Nevada beginning at 1 p.m. Admission is free to Spartan Gym, located on the corner of Fourth and San Carlos Streets in San José.
