Albuquerque, N.M.— Fernanda Vido and Thaliana Grajeda led the Spartan hitting and blocking attack Thursday night as the San José State volleyball team fell at New Mexico 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 26-24) in a Mountain West match at the Johnson Center.
Vido led all Spartan hitters with 15 kills and added six digs in the loss. Grajeda was the only other SJSU hitter in double-figures with 11 kills and hit a team-best .409 for the match (11-2-22). She also led the team in blocks with six block assists.
Laura Parts notched seven kills and four blocks for San José State. Setter Breann Robinson had 30 assists, five digs, two service aces and two block assists. Libero Luiza Andrade recorded a team-best 14 digs to go with three assists and an ace.
San José State hit just .179 for the match and outblocked New Mexico 8-4. The Spartans are now 15-9 overall and 7-6 in the MW.
The Spartans started the first set slowly, falling behind 6-0, before using a 5-0 run to cut the lead to 6-5. The two teams battled back and forth for most of the match, before San José State took a 22-21 lead on Vido kill. New Mexico scored the next four points to win 25-22.
In the second set, San José State jumped out to an early 4-1 lead, but New Mexico slowly chipped away at the lead before taking the lead for good at 9-8. The Lobos led by as many as four points in the set before winning 25-22.
The third set found New Mexico jumping out to a 9-6 early in the third set. The Spartan used a 9-1 run to take a 15-10 lead into the media timeout. The Lobos tied the match at 19-19 and took the lead at 20-19, but the Spartans fought back to lead 23-21 on a Parts kill. SJSU had a set point at 24-22 on another Parts kill, but the Lobos scored the next four points and ended the match with back-to-back blocks to win 26-24.
