Stockton, Calif.—Hanah Blume became the 21st player in San José State volleyball history to record a 20/20 double-double in a match, but the Spartan comeback fell short as the team lost 3-2 to Winthrop Friday night at the Bankers Classic.
Blume led all hitters with 21 kills and added 20 digs. It was the second consecutive match that she recorded 20 or more kills after getting 22 kills Wednesday night against Eastern Washington.
With her 21 kills and 20 digs, Blume joined an elite list of players who have recorded a 20/20 double-double at San José State. The last 20/20 double-double came during the 2011 season when Caitlin Andrade had 51 assists and 21 digs at Pacific.
Two other Spartans recorded double-digit kills. Mary Alice O’Reilly had 11 kills and added four blocks, while Lauren Jacobsen added 10 kills, six digs and two aces.
Other contributing included Tyanna Roy with nine kills, 12 digs and three blocks, Sarah Griest with six kills and a team-best five blocks, Michaela Leonard with 52 assists and two aces, Cori O’Donoghue with 13 digs, and Kiely Pieper with seven digs.
The Spartans fought back in the match after trailing 0-2 (25-23, 25-23). In the third set, the team took the lead for good at 14-13 on an Eagle serving error and won the set 25-19. Winthrop jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the fourth set before San José State scored the next five points to take a 5-2 lead and cruise to a 25-16 win.
The final set found the teams changing leads twice and seven ties in the set. Winthrop took the lead at 8-7 on a Blume hitting error and did not let the Spartans any closer for the rest of the set to give the Eagles a 15-11 win.
San José State continues play at the Bankers Classic on Saturday with matches against UC Riverside at 10 a.m., and Pacific at 7 p.m.
