Houston, Texas— Summer Avery led the Spartans in kills Friday as the San José State volleyball team defeated Houston 3-2 (25-20, 25-23, 16-25, 18-25, 16-14) and Louisiana Monroe 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-11) at the Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup hosted by the University of Houston.
Against the Cougars, Avery led the team with 13 kills, and Giulia Gávio added 12. Luiza Andrade had a team-best 12 kills, and Jamie Hirai added 10. Nandyala Gama led the blocking attack with five block assists. Breann Robinson recorded a team-best three service aces and 41 digs.
The first set saw the Spartans jump out to a 9-8 lead and led by as many as seven during the set to win 25-20. The second set found the two teams battling back and forth before San José State took the lead for good at 24-23 on a Gávio kill and won a block by Gávio and Thaliana Grajeda.
Houston won the third and fourth sets, 25-16 and 25-18, forcing a fifth set. During the fifth set, the two teams exchanged the lead three times and tied the score seven times. San José State had match point at 14-12 on a Latahevai Lousi kills, but the Cougars fought back to tie the score at 14-14. The Spartans took the lead on a Houston hitting error and won on a Hana Tresnáková service ace.
After a short rest, the Spartans were back on the court to face Louisiana Monroe. Avery again recorded double-digit kills in the three-set win as she led all hitters with 12 kills. Three Spartans had double-digit digs – Julie Sam with 14, Breann Robinson 13 and Luiza Andrade 12. Robinson recorded her second double-double of the season with 26 assists to go with her 13 digs.
San José State recorded a season-best nine service aces. Tresnáková led the team with a season-high three aces, Hirai and Sam each with two, and Robinson and Andrade with one.
The Spartans finish play at the Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup Saturday with a match against Houston Baptist beginning at 12:30 p.m. CDT/10:30 a.m. PDT.
