Edinburg, Texas-- Sara Hibbs and Summer Avery hit better than .300 to help lead the San José State volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep over Southern at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Tournament Friday afternoon.

Hibbs led all hitters with 13 kills and hit a team-best .435 for the match (13-3-23).  She also led the team with three block assists and two service aces.  Avery hit .333 with 11 kills on 27 attempts and just two hitting errors.

For the match, the Spartans hit .241 with 40 kills on 108 attempts and only 14 hitting errors.  The team had 57 digs, six service aces and eight blocks. 

San José State took a 15-9 lead in the first set before Southern fought back to tie the match at 17-17.  A Tyanna Roy kill gave the Spartans the lead for good, and Avery recorded one of her 11 kills for the 25-22 set win.

The two teams battled back and forth at the very beginning of the second set before the Spartans took the lead for good at 3-2 and won 25-16.  San José State hit .406 for the set with 16 kills on 32 attempts and just three hitting errors. 

San José State jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the third set before Southern used a 6-0 run to take a 9-6 lead.  The Lady Jaguars extended the lead to 13-8. After a timeout, the Spartans began to chip away at the lead and tied the set at 17-17, but did not take the lead for good until an Avery kill gave the team a 22-21 lead.  The Spartans won the set 25-22, for the 3-0 sweep.

Others contributing to the win included Breann Robinson with 27 assists and eight digs; Jamie Hirai with a team-best 13 digs and two aces; Yavianliz Rosado with 12 digs; and Nandyala Gama and Roy with seven kills each.

San José State continues play at the UTRGV Tournament on Saturday with two matches - vs. Incarnate Word at 11 a.m. CDT/9 a.m. PDT and versus UTRGV at 6:30 p.m. CDT/4:30 p.m. PDT.
