San José, Calif.--The San José State volleyball team split a pair of matches on Saturday as the team won its first match of 2015 at the San José State Invitational inside historic Spartan Gym.
The Spartans opened Saturday with a 3-0 sweep of Weber State (25-20, 25-28, 25-20). Tyanna Roy led all hitters with 10 kills. San José State hit .241 for the match and never relinquished the lead in any set.
In the nightcap, San José State fell to Sacramento State in four sets, 25-16, 18-25, 25-21, 25-15. Roy again led the Spartans with 12 kills, followed by Summer Avery with 11. Giulia Gávio recorded her first collegiate double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs. Roy also led the Spartans with five blocks, and Hibbs added four block assists.
Hirai led the Spartans with 15 digs and two service aces, while Rosado had 14 digs and three assists. At setter, Breann Robison had 24 assists, six digs and two kills, while Meehan added eight assists, four digs, two blocks and a kill.
The Spartans only leads of the match came in the 25-18 win in set two. The two teams battled for the first half of the set before San José State took the lead for good at 12-11 on a Hirai service ace. San José State led by as many as five points during the 13-7 run for the win.
Two Spartans, Roy and Hibbs, were named to the all-tournament team. Roy had 36 kills in the four matches and added 13 blocks. Hibbs led the team in blocking with 15 and added 34 kills and five service aces.
San José State finishes the weekend with a 1-3 record and travels to Texas next weekend for the UTRGV Tournament. The team faces Southern, Incarnate Word and UT Rio Grande Valley on Friday and Saturday, September 4 and 5.
