Elon, N.C.--Tyanna Roy led the San Jose State volleyball team with 10 kills as the Spartans fell to Liberty 3-0 (25-9, 25-21, 25-21) in the team's 2014 opener at the Elon Phoenix Classic.
Roy recorded her 10 kills on 32 swings. She and Jessica Oneto each recorded two block assists to the lead the Spartans.
In a match filled with debuts, head coach Jolene Shepardson made her debut on the sidelines for the Spartans. Eight players saw action for the first time in a San Jose State uniform - Sara Hibbs, Oneto, Breann Robinson, Jamie Hirai, Kalie Matthews, Summer Avery, Allison Meehan and Yavianliz Rosado.
Returner Kiely Pieper led the team with 13 digs, while Hirai added seven digs. Meehan and Robinson split time at setter as Meehan had 11 assists, while Robinson had nine. She added to five digs and two kills in the match.
Offensively, Hibbs recorded six kills, while Avery contributed five. Each recorded three digs during the three sets.
The Spartans showed improvement hitting with each set. The team started the match by hitting -.108 in the first set, but finished the third set with a .188 hitting percentage.
“I want to commend Liberty on their consistent play during the match,” said Shepardson. “I feel that we kept getting better each set and gaining more confidence with the offense. If we start that way tomorrow against Elon, good things can happen for us.
“We were getting into a rhythm offensively in the third set, it just happened too late. We need to build off of what we were doing in set three.”
