San José, Calif.--The San José State volleyball team opened the 2016 season with a 3-0 win over Providence College Friday evening at the Spartan Invitational inside Spartan Gym.
Four players made their debut in a Spartan uniform Friday night. Thaliana Grajeda and Thelma Grétarsdóttir started for team, while Latahevai Lousi and Kaitlynn Zdroik came off the bench for key contributions. Grétarsdóttir and Lousi each had seven kills for the match, Zdroik had 12 assists, two service aces and six digs and Grajeda led the team with four block assists.
The Spartans never relinquished the lead in the first set and only had that happen to the once in the second and third sets. The team hit .137 for the match but recorded five service aces and six blocks.
In the first match of the day, UMass Lowell swept Manhattan, 25-17, 25-17, 25-21.
The Spartan Invitational continues on Saturday with four matches. Providence and Manhattan begin the day at 11:00 a.m., followed by the Spartans against UMass Lowell at 1:30 p.m., UMass Lowell and Providence at 4:00 p.m. and San José State vs. Manhattan at 7:00 p.m.
