New Orleans, La. --- The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USATFCCCA) has honored the San José State University women’s track and field team and three of its student-athletes for academic excellence during the 2016-17 season.

"We are proud of our student-athletes who were honored this past school year and also are proud of our team as a whole for attaining a combined GPA above 3.00,” said San José State Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Jeff Petersmeyer. “Academics come first and we hope to add more individuals to that list each year while increasing our team's GPA."

As a team the Spartans maintained a 3.135 grade point average (GPA) and earned All-Academic Team honors. San José State was one of seven Mountain West members to achieve the designation.

Senior business management major Jade Childs, junior kinesiology major Kelsey Johnson-Upshaw and freshman Jennifer Sandoval are the three USATFCCCA All-Academic Individual honorees.

To qualify for USTFCCCA All-Academic honors, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.25 and have met at least one of the following athletic standards:
  •  For the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org.
  • For the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).

This is the third academic honor of the month of July for the Spartan trio as they were also recognized as Mountain West Scholar-Athletes and Academic All-Mountain West honorees.
