League and section champion distance runner Jeanette Zambrano has signed a National Letter-of-Intent to compete for the San José State women's track and field and women's cross country teams beginning in the fall of 2015. Spartans' distance coach Brad Wick made the announcement.
"Having Jeanette join our already strong incoming class is very exciting," Wick said. "I have had my eye on Jeanette since last summer, and I am really impressed with her consistency over the years."
Zambrano is currently a senior at Bolsa Grande High School in Garden Grove, Calif., where she has dominated the Garden Grove League. In 2014, she became a 3-peat champion in the 3200 and 1600-meter league finals. 2013 was a special year for Zambrano as she was also the 800-meter champion in track and was the South Section first round cross country champion earlier that fall.
Zambrano is also familiar with success in both the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays and Cross Country Invitational. This season, she clocked a personal-record 10:48.33 in the 3200-meter event. At the Mt. SAC Cross Country Invitational she was the 2.93 mile champion in 2013 and took a runner-up finish in the same event in 2014.
"Jeanette is a competitor with all the tools to be an amazing Division I athlete," Wick added. "With our fall signees Ashley (Cahalan) and Adilene (Aldapa), Jeanette will make an amazing trio in training alongside a strong group of returning upperclassmen."
Zambrano joins Ashley Cahalan, Adilene Aldapa, Jelia Brice-Montgomery and Kolbi Sims in the group of 2015-16 signees for the women's track and field team.
