Colorado Springs, Colo. --- San José State University’s Makayla Webb is the Mountain West’s track athlete of the week for March 14-19. The announcement from the conference comes days after Webb’s record-setting day at the Sacramento State Hornet Invitational.
Webb, a sophomore from Sacramento, Calif., set a new school-record time of 59.53 in the 400-meter hurdles, and clocked an all-conditions school record in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.51.
Both times for the Valley High School graduate are the fastest in the Mountain West, and rank inside the top-five of the NCAA’s Division I West Region. The 400-hurdles mark is the only one in the conference this season under one minute. Her 13.51 in the 100-hurdles ranks eighth overall in the country among Division I hurdlers.
“This is fantastic and very well deserved for Makayla,” said Spartans’ head coach Jeff Petersmeyer. “Coach (Kelley) Watson has done a great job training her. It’s very early in the season for times this fast, and it’s onward and upward for Makayla from here. She will go up against strong competition in the coming weeks and she will continue to improve.”
Webb will be in action this evening when the Spartans compete at the CenCal Twilight, hosted by Mountain West foe Fresno State. The meet will have live streaming via the Mountain West Digital Network.
