Logan, Utah --- San José State women's track & field multi-athletes Jade Childs and Kolbi Sims couldn't have asked for a better start to the 2017 Mountain West Women's Outdoor Championships.

Both Spartans achieved a pair of personal records and have their best scores of the season through four events of the heptathlon. Childs currently sits in second place with 3,293 points and Sims rests in sixth place with 3,108 points.

"This is easily the best first day of a heptathlon for both athletes," said director of track & field Jeff Petersmeyer. "I'm really proud of them. We have to keep the momentum going tomorrow. This is a great field."

Perhaps the biggest result of the day was Childs' shot put which traveled 11.96 meters for a personal record and a new San José State program record. The mark came on her third and final attempt.

The senior followed the shot put with a personal-best 25.62 in the 200-meter dash to end the day. Childs clocked a 13.94 in the 100-hurdles to begin her day. The time was just .03 off of her college-best, and was good for second place in the field of 12.

Childs cleared the bar at 1.67 meters on her first attempt in the high jump, tying her for third place with her teammate Sims. It was the first attempt for Sims too when she cleared the bar at 1.67 meters followed by a clap of the hands for her new personal record.

The high-jump was the second of back-to-back personal records to begin the day for Sims. She got things started with a lifetime-best 14.73 in the 100-hurdles. The sophomore just missed a third PR by one centimeter with a 10.79-meter shot put throw on her first attempt.

Childs' previous best score through day one of a heptathlon was 3,025 points, while Sims' was 2,880 points.

The San José State duo hopes to finish strong tomorrow in the final three events which include the long jump, javelin throw and the 800 meters. Fans can follow all of the action with live video streaming and live results via the Mountain West Championship Central Page on www.themw.com.
