Three Personal Bests And A Pair Of School Records For Track & Field Thursday

April 14, 2017

Azusa, Calif. --- Three San José State women's track & field athletes achieved personal-best marks on Thursday and two of those are new school records.

Both Spartans Jade Childs and Kolbi Sims completed the heptathlon at the Mt. SAC Relays/California Invitational Combined with new personal records. Meanwhile Jeanette Zambrano set a new school record for the second time this season in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Childs cracked the 5,000-point barrier for the first time with 5,034 points and a 10th place finish in the field of 57. Sims finished in 23rd place with 4,659 points.

Childs' new personal record is now the new school record in the outdoor heptathlon. She used a 36.06-meter javelin throw - also a new school record - and a 5.65 meter long jump to hit her new PR. Her distance in the long jump was good for fifth in the event.

Sims climbed up two spots from her position at the end of day one. She jumped 5.25 meters in the long jump, threw the javelin 28.59 meters and clocked a 2:37.46 in the 800. Her 4,659 points at the end of the heptathlon beat her previous best from last year's Mountain West Championships.

Zambrano just broke the school record in the steeplechase on March 18 at the Hornet Invitational, and she did it again Thursday at the Mt. SAC Relays. The sophomore finished the race in 10:47.47, beating her time from last month by just over two seconds.

Three more Spartan distance runners were in action on Thursday at the Bryan Clay Invitational hosted by Azusa Pacific University. Karina Nunes ran an 18:12.28 for the fastest of the three in the 5,000 meters. Nunes was 8th out of 30 in her heat.

Carmen Contreras ran an 18:51.65 for a ninth place result out of 30, while Ashley Cahalan finished in 19:14.86.

The busy week continues for San José State on Friday with entries in the Bryan Clay Invitational and the Mt. SAC Relays. Final results will be posted on SJSUSpartans.com.
