Albuquerque, N.M. --- Jade Childs and Kolbi Sims combined to score seven points for San José State University in the women’s pentathlon and the Spartans stand in sixth place out of 11 after day one of the 2017 Mountain West Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Childs totaled 3,617 points across the five events throughout the day and the senior finished in fourth place to give the Spartans five team points. Sims, a sophomore, recorded a personal record 3,445 points to earn seventh place and two more team points.

“It was a great PR in the pentathlon for Kolbi,” said director of Track & Field Jeff Petersmeyer. “It’s been tough to practice with bad weather and the poor condition of our track and I think we made the best of it today. We’re excited to see what these two will do with more events to come at these championships.”

Childs took first place in the first event by clocking an 8.82 in the 60-meter hurdles. She was also top-five in the field of 14 in the high jump, shot put, and long jump.

With the new personal record in the pentathlon, Sims scored team points for SJSU at the MW Championships for the first time in her young career.

Both Childs and Sims have more competition up ahead in the next two days of the MW Track & Field Championships. Fans can follow the action with live video streaming and results via the Championship Central page at themw.com
