Three Spartans were recognized on a national level for excellence in the classroom during the 2016-17 school year.

Kolbi Sims and Jade Childs combined to score six points for the Spartans with their lifetime bests in the heptathlon.
Both Spartans achieved their highest point totals through the first day of a heptathlon.
AT SJSU: Competed during indoor season while redshirting the outdoor season during her second year as a Spartans in 2015-16.
Outdoor: Redshirted the season.
Indoor: Became one of the women’s track and field programs first athletes to compete in the pentathlon, which she did three times … Season-best 3,712 points in the pentathlon came at the Mountain West Championships (2/25) … Set a new indoor 60-hurdles record with an 8.71 at the MW Championship.
Indoor: Sat out the indoor season as a redshirt after transferring from Northern Arizona University.
Outdoor: Competed in three heptathlon events and also specialized in the 100-meter hurdles ... her fifth-place finish in the Mountain West heptathlon earned four team points, SJSU's first-ever points in an outdoor championship ... scored a personal-record 4,991 points in the California Invitational Combined heptathlon ... personal-record 14.01 in the 100-hurdles at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival ... recorded the shot put (11.07m) and javelin throw (32.47m) school records at the Mountain West Championship ... other season-bests include: 14.32 -- 100-meter hurdles, 2:37.53 -- 800 meters, 5.86 meters -- long jump and 1.67 meters -- long jump.
NORTHERN ARIZONA: Competed in the heptathlon for the Lumberjacks... In 2014, Childs finished third in the Big Sky Outdoor Championships women's heptathlon with a career best 4,974 points, while also earned first-team All-Big Sky honors as part of the Lumberjacks 4x100-meter relay that ran the fastest time in NAU history ... Collegiate bests of 14.07 in the 100-meter hurdles, 5-feet-5 in the high jump, and 19-feet-4 in the long jump.
CAPITAL HIGH SCHOOL: Won the 2012 Girls 5A State Championship in the 100-meter hurdles with an Idaho championship meet record-setting time of 14.15 ... Her time bettered the previous record set by Karla Childs, her mom, in 1992... At the 2011 USATF Junior Olympics, she earned All-America honors placing eighth in the Young Women's heptathlon with 4,243 points.
