David Fales, a senior football player and the women's tennis freshman doubles team of Marie Klocker and Gaelle Rey are the Spartan Foundation Student-Athletes of the Month for October, presented by ScholarShare. It is the first honor of the 2013-14 school year for all three student-athletes.
In October, Klocker and Rey became the first doubles team in San José State history to advance to the ITA Northwest Regional Championship semifinals. En route, the freshmen from Mulhouse, France and Geneva, Switzerland, respectively, topped the 11th-ranked duo nationally, 8-4, in the round of 16 to advance to the semifinal round.
Fales led San José State to comeback victories against Hawai'i, Colorado State and Wyoming in October, helping the Spartans become the first San José State team to rebound from a 1-3 season start to a 4-3 overall record. The Salinas, Calif., native set a Mountain West for most consecutive games passing for at least 300 yards and became the first Spartan to pass for at least 400 yards in back-to-back games (against Colorado State and Wyoming).
