Truong, Florea Win Consolation Openers; Fall Season Complete

Stanford, Calif.---Sandra Florea and Chau Truong, are both freshmen for San Jose State, and both won their matches in the opening round of consolation play at the ITA Northwest Regional Tournament at Stanford.

Florea defeated Milica Zivanovic of Sacramento State in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3; while Truong beat Stanford's Natalie Dillon, 6-3, 6-3.

"Both Sandra and Chau played extremely well in their first matches," said head coach Anh-Dao Nguyen-Church. "Chau had very quick feet against her opponent who had some powerful strokes on the ball, and that's how she was able to win."
In the next round, Truong dropped a close first set to Pacific's Julia Hansen, 7-6 (5) and was knocked out after a 6-1 loss in the second set. Florea was beaten by Sidney Brady of UC Davis after she retired from the match two points into the second set, 6-3, 2-0 (ret).

The rest of the singles entries for the Spartans: Olivia Marshall, Jennifer Williams, Kerri Kummer all lost in straight sets in the first round of the consolation matches. San Jose State's fall season ended Saturday, but coach Nguyen-Church was left with good impressions for the spring season.

"We found out this fall that the freshmen on the team can compete in tough competition, and under pressure. In combination with that, we had Anna Guzman step up as a leader on our team. With her experience, our team has a great chance to get better and be successful when spring season arrives."

San Jose State plays their first match of the season at home against Cal State Bakersfield on January 29, 2010.
