Women's Tennis Gets Second Win Against Pac-10 Foe

Stanford, Calif. Senior Amber Silverstone defeated Catalina Visico of California in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3, in the consolation bracket of the ITA Northwest Regional Championship at Stanford University on Saturday.

“I’m extremely proud of her for having the confidence to play on center court against a Pac-10 opponent and win,” said head coach Anh-Dao Nguyen-Church.

Anna Guzman, a sophomore, drew Sarah Oudomvilay of San Francisco and extended her to three sets before falling, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.

“Anna played extremely hard today, and she really stood out against a player who has given our entire team trouble in the past,” said Nguyen-Church.

The rest of the squad: senior’s Silvana Dukic and Sanda Hadzisabic, junior Jennifer Williams, sophomore Olivia Marshall and freshman Kerri Kummer, all dropped their consolation matches in straight sets.

Despite those losses it was a big weekend for the team.  The squad got two wins against Pac-10 opponents, one in doubles and another in consolation singles today.

With the conclusion of the ITA Northwest Regional Championships, the Spartans have finished their fall schedule.  The team will return to action on Sunday, February 1 when they face the Roadrunners of Cal State Bakersfield in Bakersfield, Calif.
