Guzman Leads Spartans At Saint Mary's Invitational

Moraga, Calif.---Junior Anna Guzman was the only Spartan to win in both rounds in the opening day of the 2009 Saint Mary's Invitational. However, San Jose State did pick up two others wins in consolation matches by Kerri Kummer, and true freshman Chau Truong.

Guzman rebounded from a first set loss (4-6) against Washington's Vanja Radunovic by completeing two 6-3 set victories in a row. The win put her on to the next round of 16 players where she faced Isabelle Hoy from Santa Clara University.

Guzman took the first set by a close score of 6-4, and then finished off the match with a 6-3 second set win that sealed the match. "Anna was our best player on the court today and the results showed that," said head coach Anh-Dao Nguyen-Church. "I'm very proud of the way she kept herself in matches and pulled out a couple of wins for San Jose State."

Sophomore Kerri Kummer, despite being shutout in the first round 6-0, 6-0 by California's Kasia Siwosz, bounced back to get a consolation victory. She beat Sidney Brady, a junior from UC Davis, 6-0, 7-5.

Chau Truong also bounced back from an early morning loss to defeat Jessy Mekpoh of USF, 6-0, 6-2.  "Chau was a bright spot for the new players on our team, and I'm very happy with her efforts as well as the other freshman who played in their first collegiate tournament," said Nguyen-Church.

San Jose State split their two doubles matches on the day. Kerri Kummer teamed up with freshman Sandra Florea, and breezed by Noelle Eades, and Shawdee Rouhafza from UC Davis, 8-1. Meanwhile Guzman and Truong were on the short end of a tie brake point victory by a pairing from the University of Washington, 9-7.

The Spartans continue action on Saturday in the second round of the annual Saint Mary's Invitational. All players from the opening day will get there shot again, and coach Nguyen-Church is optimistic about day two, "We had a couple of nice victories in both singles and doubles today and we'll look to do even better then that in the next couple days of this tournament."
