The San Jose State women's tennis team will see their first action of the fall season in Moraga, Calif., at the Saint Mary's Invitational this weekend, October 15-18.
This Bay Area tournament will host a number of local colleges in a wide range of conferences that make for a competitive kickoff to the fall season.
While the Spartans lost three seniors from the 08-09 season: Amber Silverstone, Silvana Dukic, and Sanda Hadzisabic; they plan to utilize some new faces for their success in the 2009-10 season.
Sandra Florea is one of those five to join the Spartan tennis team this season.
"I'm excited and nervous at the same time about playing this weekend," said the true freshman. "I have experience with these big tournaments, but at the same time, I feel like this is a whole new level for me."
Kerri Kummer, a returning sophomore will be by Florea's side in doubles action this weekend. With that, Sandra should have an easier time adjusting to division I competition. Last season, Kummer was half of the Spartans' best doubles team by record. She and Anna Guzman, who is also returning, finished with a 7-6 record.
Head coach Anh-Dao Nguyen-Church had this to say about her team going into the tournament, "We have a lot of new faces on the team this year, and I can't wait to see how they handle themselves under pressure out on the court. The incoming players have set the bar very high for our returnees, and I'm very pleased with the level of competition coming from our players in practice."
Nguyen-Church announced these players will be competing in the Saint Mary's Invite this weekend:
