Women's Tennis Opens Season At Saint Mary's Invitational

The San Jose State University women’s tennis team opens its 2008-09 season as one of many teams entered in the Saint Mary’s College Invitational.

Teams throughout Northern California and the West Coast will compete in the three-day event beginning Friday, October 10 and concluding Sunday, October 12. Typically, San Jose State, Cal, Stanford, San Francisco, Santa Clara, Sacramento State, UC Davis, Sonoma State, Fresno State and Pacific enter players in the Invitational. Gonzaga, Portland and Loyola Marymount, three more schools that share Saint Mary’s West Coast Conference affiliation.

No team scoring is kept in the double-elimination, three-bracket format. Players will be divided into Red, White & Blue brackets and compete for championship and consolation championship honors in singles and doubles competition.

Returning letter winners Amber Silverstone, Sanda Hadzisabic and Silvana Dukic are among the projected San Jose State entries. Hadzisabic won two singles matches at the 2007 Saint Mary’s Invitational.

The Saint Mary’s Tournament is the first of two Fall season tournaments for the Spartans. San Jose State also is entered in the ITA Northwest Regional Championships hosted by Stanford, October 17-20.

In both cases, there is no admission charge to watch the Spartans in tournament play.
