Spartans Open Season At NIKE Invitational

Berkeley, Calif.-----San Jose State University opens its 2012-13 season as one of 13 teams competing in the NIKE Invitational women's tennis tournament.

Hosted by the University of California, the three-day tournament starts, Friday, September 28, and runs through Sunday, September 30. Play begins each morning no later than 9:00 a.m. at the Hellman Tennis Complex and Channing Courts on the Cal campus.

Led by second-year coach Sylvain Malroux, the Spartans return their entire singles and doubles lineups from last year's team that posted a 13-7 dual match record and set a school record with 12 consecutive dual match victories.

Junior Sabastiani Leon Chao and sophomore Erica Medlin earned All-Western Athletic Conference honors a year ago. Leon Chao was a second-team singles honoree and teamed with Medlin as a second-team all-conference doubles pair.

Malroux added promising newcomers to the roster starting with 2012 California Community College state tournament singles champion Julianna Bacelar

The Spartans have four singles entry and one doubles pair in the six-division tournament. Leon Chao is San Jose State's singles entry in the 32-player Gold Division. Bacelar, Medlin and senior Chau Truong are in the 32-player Blue Division. Truong is the fourth seed.

Leon Chao and Bacelar are the the one doubles duo competing for the Spartans and are in the Gold Division.

Besides San Jose State and host Cal, players from Arizona State, BYU, UC Davis, Fresno State, Minnesota, Nevada, Pacific, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's, Santa Clara, and Stanford are competing for titles in singles and doubles competition.
