Berkley, Calif. - San Jose State's Sabastiani Leon Chao advanced past the quarter final round of the Cal Nike Invite in singles on September 25.
Leon Chao's 6-4, 6-2 win over Santa Clara's Maggie McGeorge landed her in a semi final match against an undetermined player on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. The win was one of three on the day against area rival Santa Clara.
Chau Truong was also a quarter final winner for the Spartans, as she beat Gayane Sarkisian of Sacramento State, 6-2, 6-4. Truong went on to face WAC opponent Aodhnait Lombard of Nevada and beaten in straight sets 6-1, 6-1.
San Jose State tallied two wins in doubles competition, both against Santa Clara. Anna Guzman and Olivia Marshall pared up to beat Elaine Chesoni and Eleanor Ford 8-2 in the consolation semi-finals. Then, went on to defeat SCU's duo of Carolina O'Haren and Jessica Agra in the consolation finals, 8-6
"Our team had a good showing here and we're proud to have a player going deep into the tournament," said Spartans head coach Anh-Dao Nguyen-Church. "We gained some good experience, and are ready to play out the rest of our fall season."
Following the conclusion of the Cal Nike Invite, San Jose State will play their second fall season tournament at the Saint Mary's Classic on October 8-10.
